Creative Sliding Doors for Nursery School

We often get asked to create custom, made to measure ( to the mm ) sliding doors for a wide variety of installations. We’ve designed doors for a narrowboat storage solution, static caravans and lodge wardrobes and we’ve even fitted out some sliding doors for a garden home. All of these installations are bespoke and we work with the client to make sure they fit perfectly and achieve the best results to fit their budgets.

We were recently asked to supply some sliding wardrobe doors for a nursery school. With a bit of creative thinking we came up with a colourful and unique 6 door fitted wardrobe solution. The requirements of this wardrobe was that it had to store all the day-to-day clutter and equipment and of course it had to be child friendly.

By utilising the full width of the room, there was enough room to store everything, from play equipment, to pens and paper and even chairs. We segmented this into 6 different doors, so that each door could hold different things; one door for painting, one door for toys etc.

Colourful and Functional Sliding Doors

By colour-coding the doors, the teachers and the children could tell what equipment belonged behind which door. We used 3 egger melamine colourful doors, red, blue and yellow.

These alternated between a white door, which is made from the same material a white board is used from. This made it functional with the kids and the teachers for lesson time. We also integrated a chalk blackboard into one of the panels making a traditional, functional tool for the teachers.

Child Friendly Sliding Doors

Of course, each of these doors had to be carefully thought about in terms of construction, because they had to be child friendly. That means making sure they are strong and durable as well as being safe. By using split panels on each door, we increase the integrity of the door which makes it much more rigid and strong.

One of the doors being styled in a mirror finish, which was reinforced to ensure that it was safe for kids to play around and that it wouldn’t damage easily. This makes the door slightly heavier, which is why took the decision to put it at the far end of the wardrobe. All of our Glass and Mirror is Safety Backed to BS EN 12600.

Adding a soft close option on the sliding doors, means that the likelihood of a child trapping their fingers in the door is reduced. It also means that the doors are less likely to be damaged if the doors are handled in a heavy way.

Here's what Rachel from the school said:

Everything is looking fabulous and the staff and children think they’re brilliant! Thanks again for your amazing help support and patience! And for answering the phone to me a million times!! Enormously appreciated.
